"MARKET OUTLOOK - 2007"

According to most bankers and many economists, Interest Rates are expected to decline sometime during 2007. However, I believe that if there are any reductions, they will be small and short-lived.

It appears that the US economy's growing foreign debt and trade deficits will lead to further devaluation of their currency. Thus, they will be forced to raise interest rates in 2007.

Although the general inflation rate in Canada was only 1.4%, food and shelter costs rose 3.1% and 2.9% in 2006.  Using inflation criteria of the 1970's and 1980's, our actual rate is likely closer to 4%. Higher inflation leads to higher interest rates.

Escalating tensions due to Iran's nuclear program, and major US fleet and military re-positioning, could hold up oil prices during 2007.

The "China Syndrome" stock market fluctuation may have forced some pragmatism upon speculators, but I see this more as a global signal that China's economy has finally become integrated with the rest of the world.

Thus, demand for business capital investments may begin to draw down the surpluses that have held down interest rates for so many years.

Overall, the emerging short-term global recession will likely cap near term property values.

In spite of external economic issues or concerns, low interest rates, flat house prices, and healthy GTA demand should produce an active real estate market in 2007.
